"There's a need here. We're developing something special here in Peoria," says Robert McWilliams, MD, the deputy director with OSF Cancer Institute. "This helps us get recognition that we're a player in the region and serving the people of Central Illinois. It also means we're collaborating with other researchers in the region to put OSF and those we serve on the map."

HCRN is a consortium of community oncology programs and academic centers across the United States that collaborate on clinical trials, with a particular focus on investigator-initiated studies. Founded in 1984, HCRN now supports a nationwide network of more than 100 academic and community research sites. The organization has conducted more than 250 clinical trials, enrolled more than 10,000 patients and contributed to more than 350 scientific publications.

The affiliation strengthens the growing role of OSF Cancer Institute in cancer research and positions the organization to contribute to clinical studies that could shape the future of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. For those served, this work creates more opportunities to participate in cancer research while receiving high-quality care.

OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute is expanding its ability to treat complex heart valve conditions, becoming the first health care provider in Illinois outside of Chicago to offer EVOQUE transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR) – a minimally invasive procedure that replaces a damaged tricuspid heart valve without open-heart surgery.

The first EVOQUE procedure at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria took place in late July. The patient was discharged after the procedure with excellent results.

TTVR gives physicians another minimally invasive option for people with severe tricuspid regurgitation, a condition in which the heart’s tricuspid valve does not close properly and allows blood to flow backward. This can lead to people experiencing fatigue, weakness and swelling, according to the American Heart Association.

“Beyond TAVR, MitraClip and TriClip, the addition of TTVR allows us to advance our program capabilities through a minimally invasive, catheter-based approach for the treatment of valvular disease,” says Sudhir Mungee, MD, director of the structural heart division at OSF Cardiovascular Institute.

Instead of making a large incision in the chest, a team of heart specialists guides a replacement valve to the heart through a vein in the groin using a thin tube called a catheter.

For some people with severe tricuspid regurgitation, traditional surgery may carry significant risks like heart failure, bleeding, infection and stroke. TTVR provides another option, particularly for people who are considered high risk for surgery.

The minimally invasive approach can also mean:

· A shorter hospital stay – often one to two days compared to five to seven or more days for open-heart surgery

· A faster recovery – often days instead of weeks

With the addition of EVOQUE TTVR, people with complex tricuspid valve disease now have access to another advanced treatment option at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Building on 65 years of caring for inpatient behavioral health patients in Urbana, the new units offer inpatient treatment for individuals who need immediate help or are in a state of crisis. Spanning multiple floors in the hospital, the renovation and service expansion includes specialized treatment programs for young adult patients ages 18-26 and senior patients ages 55 and older. A detoxification program will soon be available for patients who need a safe environment to withdraw from substances. 

OSF Sacred Heart – Urbana, the area’s only adult inpatient behavioral health hospital, will offer 65 beds dedicated to mental health treatment. 

Updates to the behavioral health expansion at OSF Sacred Heart – Urbana include: 

• 40 private inpatient behavioral health beds
• 25 inpatient beds for medical detoxification or other conditions, opening late 2026
• State-of-the-art facilities for treatment with natural light and soothing colors
• Private rooms with multiple safety components, designed for behavioral health needs
• Specialized training for physicians, nurses, techs and other caregivers
• Treatment focused on young adults and senior populations, allowing for peer support and group therapy
• Outpatient behavioral health services available locally through OSF Medical Group to ensure continuity of care in Urbana

At OSF HealthCare Illinois Neurological Institute in Peoria, people from across the state have access to one of Illinois’ few Level 4 Epilepsy Centers, offering the highest level of specialized epilepsy care available.

Designated by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC), the Level 4 accreditation recognizes the center's ability to provide advanced diagnostic testing, comprehensive medical management and complex surgical treatments for epilepsy. The designation also reflects a broader commitment to expanding access for expert epilepsy care for people throughout Illinois.

For Thandar Aung, MD, medical director of the epilepsy center at OSF HealthCare Illinois Neurological Institute, improving access to specialized epilepsy care was one of the primary reasons she joined OSF.

"In my past job, I was getting patients from all over the country, and even outside of the United States," Dr. Aung says. "The access to epileptologists, or rather the lack of access, really showed why there are limitations."

Having spent her career in large metropolitan academic medical centers, Dr. Aung saw firsthand how difficult it can be for people to find an epilepsy specialist.

Peoria stood out because of its ability to serve people across a large geographic region. OSF Illinois Neurological Institute regularly cares for people throughout Central and Western Illinois, including communities near the Iowa and Missouri borders. For many Illinois residents living near those state lines, receiving care in Illinois can also make a significant difference when navigating insurance coverage.

Epilepsy is a lifelong condition, so getting the right care as early as possible helps people live their lives to the fullest.

What Level 4 means for patients

The NAEC designates epilepsy centers based on the level of care they can provide. A Level 4 epilepsy center offers the most comprehensive services available, including advanced diagnostic testing, multidisciplinary care and complex surgical procedures for people whose seizures cannot be controlled with medication alone.

"Level 4 is where you're able to do the invasive epilepsy surgeries, including invasive pre-surgical evaluation such as depth electrodes also known as stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG),” Dr. Aung says. “You place them in the brain based on a hypothesis, using all the available data to determine where the seizures are coming from. Of course, this is very dependent on experience. If you place the SEEG electrodes in the wrong locations, you could localize the seizures to the wrong part of the brain, potentially leading to an unsuccessful surgery or harm to the patient.”

The Level 4 designation also reflects the collaborative approach patients receive. Physicians, including epileptologists and functional neurosurgeons, work alongside specialized nurses, neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists, social workers and other experts to create individualized treatment plans tailored to each person's needs.

Advancing epilepsy care

While medications successfully control seizures for many people with epilepsy, others have drug-resistant epilepsy and may benefit from surgery or newer technologies.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is one innovation Dr. Aung is particularly excited about. The technology measures the brain’s magnetic fields (instead of the electrical field used in an electroencephalogram (EEG)), to help identify where seizures originate.

"With an EEG, we try to read the brain and its electrical activity," Dr. Aung says. "There's another way you can read brain activity by using the magnetic field. Sometimes you cannot see the electrical activity, but you can see it with the magnetic activity."

Dr. Aung also hopes to expand access to epilepsy clinical trials, giving patients opportunities to receive promising therapies before they become widely available and helping researchers better understand which treatments work best for each person.

Recognizing the signs

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurring seizures, but not every seizure looks the same. While some involve full-body convulsions, others may appear as brief staring spells, confusion or other subtle changes.

Dr. Aung encourages anyone experiencing unexplained episodes or symptoms that continue to occur to seek medical evaluation as soon as possible.

Although seizures are commonly related to abnormal brain activity, she notes that some heart conditions can mimic seizures and may be life-threatening if left untreated.

As one of the few Level 4 epilepsy centers in Illinois, OSF HealthCare Illinois Neurological Institute is continuing to grow its capabilities with one goal in mind: ensuring more patients throughout the state have access to the advanced, comprehensive epilepsy care they need.

Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, is a common complication after stroke that can increase the risk of pneumonia, prolong hospital stays and, in severe cases, require patients to rely on feeding tubes for nutrition.

In May 2026, Cal was riding his bicycle at his grandmother’s home in Rock Falls when he lost control on a steep hill and entered the roadway. He was struck by a vehicle traveling approximately 50 mph.

Cal suffered a severe traumatic brain injury with bleeding and swelling in his brain. Emergency responders quickly arrived, and an OSF Life Flight helicopter transported him to OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois in Peoria.

“God is real,” Cory says. “Two EMTs hit him, so they knew what to do and we also found out the helicopter from Peoria was only two minutes from us, so they got him there. Once he got here, we had a great team to help him out.”

The quick transport allowed Cal to receive care at OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois, the region’s only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center.

The right care at the right time

When Cal arrived at OSF Children’s Hospital, he was in critical condition and required immediate care from multiple pediatric specialists, including trauma, neurosurgery and critical care teams.

Dr. Chegondi says getting Cal to the right facility at the right time was a key factor in his outcome.

“Time is of the essence, especially with dealing with very sick patients,” Dr. Chegondi says. “One of the key factors in this child’s positive outcome was getting early to the right facility at the right time.”

A fight for recovery

Cal spent several weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where his care team worked to control swelling and pressure inside his brain.

He underwent three craniectomies, surgeries that temporarily remove part of the skull to relieve pressure on the brain, along with additional procedures to monitor and manage his condition. He also required breathing support before he was able to breathe on his own again.

Dr. Chegondi says there were moments when Cal’s future was uncertain.

“When I look back, I was so concerned at one point,” Dr. Chegondi says. “We couldn’t control the pressure in his brain. We were using all kinds of neurosurgical procedures.”

After learning Cal had been struck by a vehicle, Cory rushed to the hospital. The drive felt endless.

“I was 10 or 15 minutes away,” Cory says. “All I could say was no. I think I said it 500 times on the way there.”

For Cory and Alyssa, the uncertainty was overwhelming. The family was told Cal might need to relearn basic skills, including walking, talking and eating.

A recovery called a miracle

But Cal continued to make progress beyond expectations.

His family watched as he began remembering them, his favorite toys and the things that made him who he is.

“The progress he has made is unreal in the time we have been here,” Cory says. “The severity of his injuries, he is doing better than we were told and what we expected. He is a miracle baby.”

Dr. Chegondi says Cal’s recovery is something he will remember.

“Looking back, I’d say this was a miracle,” Dr. Chegondi says. “It is a testament of our impact as a team.”

Continuing his journey

After several weeks at OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois, Cal was discharged to continue his recovery through rehabilitation services.

Throughout his hospitalization, the McCallister family found support from the OSF care team and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois, which provided a place for the family to rest and connect with others going through similar experiences.

“They genuinely care about the kids here,” Cory says. “They want the best for him as much as we do.”

Cal’s recovery journey continues, but his family remains grateful for every milestone and for the team that helped give him the opportunity to heal. For the McCallister family, a devastating bicycle accident became a story of faith, expert pediatric care and a miracle recovery.

OSF HealthCare has expanded and renovated the emergency department (ED) at OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. The space has been expanded by 7,000 square feet, adding six additional rooms to accommodate patients.

OSF HealthCare held a Blessing & Dedication of the space on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

“We are deeply committed to meeting the growing healthcare needs of our community, and this expansion of the emergency department reflects that commitment. By investing in additional space, resources, and capabilities, we are ensuring patients and families have timely access to high-quality emergency care close to home,” says Zach Yoder, President of OSF St. Mary Medical Center. “This dedication is about more than growth. It is about strengthening our ability to serve the community with compassion, excellence and readiness for the future.”

Since the expansion, hospital leaders report a 30% decrease in time for patients to see a provider.

“This will allow us to provide timely, high-quality care for a greater number of patients. Adding a second triage room allows our Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to evaluate patients from the waiting room without impacting the triage nurse’s ability to efficiently care for patients,” says Nathaniel Baker, MD, managing medical director of emergency medicine with OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center. “This change ensures patients’ care can move forward even while in the waiting room.”

OSF HealthCare leaders, physicians and staff attended, as well as community partners, celebrating this expansion which provides additional care to the Greater Galesburg region. This expansion echoes the commitment of OSF to the Greater Galesburg Area, and across the Ministry.

With the objective to accelerate cancer detection and care for residents in the greater West Central Illinois region, OSF St. Mary Medical Center (Galesburg) now has access to leading-edge technology, allowing medical providers to scan a person’s lungs and get a biopsy on the same day.

On Thursday, February 5, board-certified pulmonologist Usman A. Cheema, MD, OSF Medical Group (Galesburg), performed a bronchoscopy utilizing the hospital’s new Intuitive ION robotic system, a minimally invasive way to biopsy a patient’s lungs and get answers more efficiently.

"Robotic bronchoscopy has become the way of the future in terms of lung nodule diagnosis. It allows us to biopsy very small nodules (dense areas of tissue, or spots)," says Matthew Sehring, DO, managing medical director, OSF Medical Group, Galesburg. "We can biopsy lung nodules that were not able to be biopsied previously because they were too small. It also allows us to biopsy nodules that are far out on the edge of the lungs that were difficult to reach before.”

The goal of the Ion technology is primarily to diagnose lung cancer early. However, it also gives patients with non-cancerous lung nodules peace of mind.

"We are hoping to diagnose lung cancer while it is very small, at a very early stage, and provide patients with the opportunity for either surgical or radiation cure of their cancer. That's our number one goal," Dr. Sehring says. “So, for our patients who do have lung nodules, we want to provide them with a diagnosis, whether it is cancer or something else.”

If a person has a history of smoking or a family history of lung cancer, Dr. Sehring says it’s important to get screened. Screening remains the greatest tool to catch lung cancer early. Some nodules used to be biopsied using a needle from outside the body. The robotic bronchoscopy allows the team to biopsy from the inside in a safer way, preventing possible complications. When a lung nodule is diagnosed at an earlier stage, it is much more likely to allow for curative treatment.

"A lung cancer screening is very simple. It's a low-dose CAT scan of the lungs. Most lung cancer screenings are covered by insurance. It's a two-minute scan," Dr. Sehring says. "You get scheduled for a CAT scan. You come in and there's no contrast or IV required. You come in, get your CAT scan, and it's usually read within 24 hours."

If cancerous nodules are found in the patient's lungs, they will be referred to our multidisciplinary lung cancer team for further evaluation and treatment. This includes a surgeon who decides if the lung nodule can be surgically removed. There is also a medical oncologist who can advise if chemotherapy or immunotherapy is needed. Lastly, a radiation oncologist is part of the team and can provide radiation treatment if necessary.

The addition of robotic bronchoscopy is the second instance in the last six months that OSF St. Mary Medical Center has acquired leading-edge technology to enhance its minimally invasive robotic surgery services. In August 2025, the da Vinci 5 surgical system was added, expanding access to minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery in the greater Galesburg area.

“Robotic surgical technology can improve safety and outcomes during complex surgery. Among the key elements of the partnership, the OSF HealthCare logo will be prominently featured across the front of Peoria City’s new uniform kits designed by Aretyn, which were unveiled by Peoria City players.

Additional sponsorship elements include an increased presence for OSF HealthCare initiatives at Peoria City games, as well as more prominent signage at Shea Stadium during the Peoria City season, as well as year-round at The Yard Peoria. Set to open in spring 2027, the Pediatric Specialty Care Center will bring multiple pediatric subspecialties together in one centralized location, including cardiology, neurology, pulmonology and urology. The facility will also include on-site imaging and laboratory services to support coordinated, efficient care for patients and their families.

The new center is designed to streamline the care experience by reducing the need for families to travel between multiple locations for appointments and testing. OSF leaders noted the project supports continued growth in pediatric specialty services and increasing demand across the region.

Leaders, Mission Partners and invited guests gathered for the ceremony to recognize the progress of the project and its future impact on pediatric care delivery. As part of the event, attendees also participated in a time capsule activity that will be opened 10 years after the center is operational.

Rafael Marquez, MD, a minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon with OSF HealthCare and assistant professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP), performs a range of procedures designed to help women heal faster and return to their normal routines.

“Some of the procedures I perform at OSF include minimally invasive hysterectomies, excision of endometriosis, ovarian cystectomies, operative hysteroscopy as well as repair of pelvic organ prolapse,” Dr. Marquez says.

What “minimally invasive” means

Minimally invasive surgery is the ability to perform operative procedures using small incisions, Dr. Marquez says.

 “What that means for patients, is they can expect to go home on the same day as their surgery. Benefits of minimally invasive surgery include improved post-operative pain, faster return to normal activities and normal recovery times,” he adds.

Common conditions Dr. Marquez treats

The most common conditions Dr. Marquez treats include endometriosis, uterine fibroids and pelvic organ prolapse (POP).

“Endometriosis affects about 10% of reproductive-aged women. Uterine fibroids are very common. By menopause, you can expect about 70-80% of women will have been diagnosed with a uterine fibroid,” Dr. Marquez says. “Although only 30-50% of those patients have symptoms due to fibroids.”

Systematic pelvic organ prolapse (POP) occurs in roughly 3-6% of women, though examinations show up to 50% may have some degree of prolapse, even without symptoms.

While these conditions are not life-threatening, Dr. Marquez says they can significantly affect quality of life. “Providing these minimally invasive procedures can help change lives for the better,” he says.

When to talk to your OB/GYN

Unending pain and heavy bleeding are two symptoms that deserve attention. Dr. Marquez stresses the importance of open communication between patients and their OB/GYN.

“These are things your OB/GYN should be in constant communication and evaluation on to discuss if something like endometriosis or uterine fibroids are going on,” he adds.

Endometriosis and uterine fibroids mainly affect women of reproductive age (ages 15-49), while pelvic organ prolapse becomes more common with age, though it can still affect younger women.

Prevention and treatment

Maintaining a healthy weight, prioritizing regular exercise, avoiding chronic constipation and straining and not drinking alcohol or smoking can help lower the risk of pelvic organ prolapse.

As part of a patient’s continuum of care at OSF HealthCare, some of the conditions Dr. Marquez treats could also be treated using pelvic floor therapy, a therapy that focuses on the three layers of muscle supporting the pelvic organs against gravity. OSF has specially trained pelvic rehabilitation specialists who can help patients through this process.

Effective Sunday, March 29, Yoder will transition to president of OSF HealthCare Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth, OSF HealthCare Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee and OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

Yoder has been serving as interim president of OSF St. Mary Medical Center and OSF Holy Family Medical Center for the last few months. Before this move, he was serving as the president of OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton starting in 2025. 

Lisa Schepers, DNP, will continue to serve as interim president for OSF Saint Anthony's as the search for president continues. Jackie Kernan, RN, MSN has been serving as president of OSF Saint Luke Medical Center for many years. With this change, Kernan will focus exclusively as president of OSF Saint Katharine Medical Center in Dixon.

Yoder will direct all internal operations while focusing on high quality and cost-effective care for those OSF serves. Under his leadership, OSF Saint Anthony's achieved a CMS Star Rating improvement from 2 to 3 stars, multiple Leapfrog Safety Grade A ratings and secured its first-ever MAGNET accreditation with distinction.

Yoder earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Southern Illinois University and a Master of Health Administration from Webster University in St. Louis. He continued his educational career, earning a Master of Healthcare Operational Excellence from Washington University in St. Louis.

As the OSF Cancer Institute enters its third year of providing hope and healing for patients with cancer, the time has come to expand the capability to perform this critically important work. The Ministry has received approval for a certificate of need (CON) with the state of Illinois for construction plans for the fourth floor of the facility. The target for completion is spring 2027.

This new area will occupy over 29,000 square feet and will allow OSF to further expand its integrated cancer care network to include robust medical oncology, surgical oncology, and research components. The fourth floor will also allow expansion of OSF’s theranostics (diagnostics and therapeutics) program, private rooms for infusion create space for more clinical trials to take place at OSF Cancer Institute.

As part of the expansion, Robert McWilliams, MD, an internationally recognized clinician, trialist, and leader in gastrointestinal oncology and skin cancers has joined OSF HealthCare as the Deputy Director of the OSF Cancer Institute.

Dr. McWilliams was on faculty at Mayo Clinic for 20 years, serving in numerous leadership roles. He brings that expertise to OSF where he continues clinical trial and outcomes research in addition to transforming the cancer clinical practice.

Dr. McWilliams played a key role in redesigning the medical oncology care model at Mayo Clinic and will lead the expansion of the medical oncology program at OSF. He has authored more than 180 publications, and has served numerous roles across the globe, including serving on the Pancreas Cancer Task Force and the GI Cancers Steering Committee of the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. McWilliams joins the team operating under the leadership of James McGee, MD, president of the OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute that includes Jun Zhang, MD, PhD, who joined OSF last fall as vice president, Oncology Research.

Dr. Zhang is a nationally recognized leader in the research and treatment of lung cancer and has extensive expertise in bench-to-bedside translation and the development of investigator-initiated clinical trials. His work continues to shape emerging ideas at the interface of tumor immunology, microbiome science and precision medicine.

The ceremony marked the start of construction on a new facility at the intersection of Route 150 and Maher Road in Brimfield. The new building will replace the current clinic located at 111 E. Knoxville St. and is designed to expand access to primary care services in the growing community.

The new medical office building reflects OSF HealthCare’s continued commitment to meeting patients closer to home and investing in the long-term health of the communities it serves.

“This groundbreaking represents more than a new building. It represents continued investment in the people and families of Brimfield,” said Robert Bevill, MD, OSF Medical Group - Primary Care in Brimfield. “We are committed to providing convenient, high-quality care and strengthening access to primary care services for our community.”

Construction is expected to continue throughout 2026.

Over the next three years, OSF HealthCare will update 139 ultrasound units, creating a more consistent, efficient and scalable system of imaging technology across the Ministry’s hospitals and clinics. The phased deployment is designed to minimize disruption to patient care while ensuring facilities have access to reliable, advanced equipment.

Uniform configurations for probes, software and accessories will also help streamline workflows and ensure consistent imaging quality across sites.

OSF Mission Partners (employees) will receive initial training that combines classroom instruction with hands-on learning. Advanced onsite education will continue yearly to ensure clinicians can fully leverage evolving ultrasound technology.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to investing in technology that improves access to care, supports clinicians and strengthens patient outcomes across the communities OSF serves.

Sister M. Mikela brings nearly four decades of deep Mission commitment and broad leadership experience to her new role. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George in 1986 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management. Her experience includes serving as a director of nursing and subsequent administrator of a 114-bed skilled nursing facility owned and run by her sisters in St. Louis, Missouri, and chief executive officer and president of Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton, Illinois prior to it joining the OSF family.

She joined OSF HealthCare through the 2014 merger of Saint Anthony’s into OSF HealthCare and has since served on the OSF HealthCare System Board. She currently serves as executive vice president and chief ministry officer, overseeing Legal Services and Mission Services, which includes Ethics, Mission Formation, Pastoral Care, Government Relations, Economic Development, Compliance and Internal Audit.

In her new role, Sister M. Mikela will serve as the strategic partner to the CEO, helping strengthen the OSF Mission culture while guiding executive priorities, facilitating key decisions and serving as a key liaison to the Governing Board, the Catholic Church and Mission Partners across the Ministry.

“Having worked with Sister M. Mikela for over 10 years, I am confident of her leadership and her ability to help guide OSF HealthCare as we continue our Mission to serve with the greatest care and love,” said Michelle Conger in announcing the upcoming change.

The pre-hospital transfusion program began Monday, when Eureka-Goodfield EMS received two units of type O-positive red blood cells and two units of plasma from the ImpactLife distribution hub in Peoria. Two Eureka-Goodfield EMS ambulances will now always carry red blood cells and plasma.

Matthew Jackson, MD, medical director of pre-hospital and EMS at OSF HealthCare, also serves as medical director for Eureka-Goodfield EMS and Peoria Area EMS. He helped shape the pre-hospital transfusion program for Eureka-Goodfield, the first ground ambulance service in Illinois to carry blood components on board its ambulances. He describes pre-hospital transfusion as a growing area of patient care that lies at the intersection of emergency medical service and transfusion medicine.

“Bleeding from an uncontrolled hemorrhage is a leading cause of preventable death among trauma patients,” Jackson said. “Every minute counts for these patients, so receiving blood products from trained first responders can significantly improve survival, reduce the length of hospital stays and help decrease the overall use of blood once patients arrive at the emergency department.”

“We are truly honored and excited to be the first ground-based EMS service to carry blood in Illinois,” said Eureka-Goodfield EMS Division Chief Randy Wolfe. “This milestone reflects Eureka-Goodfield EMS’ commitment to innovation and patient care. Carrying blood on our ambulances allows our medics to deliver critical lifesaving care sooner, closing the gap between rural emergencies and definitive care for the entire region.”

January is National Blood Donor Month ImpactLife provides blood components used by 26 air and ground ambulance services in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin. Eureka-Goodfield EMS is served by the ImpactLife distribution hub in Peoria, which also provides blood components for OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center, Carle Health Methodist Hospital, Graham Health System in Canton, and OSF and Carle hospitals in Galesburg, Bloomington, and Urbana.

Over the past three years, the head and neck oncology program at OSF Cancer Institute has seen a more than 300% increase in patients treated for head, neck and endocrine cancers. These patients often have unique and ongoing needs that may not be fully addressed in routine office visits.

Through the remainder of his tenure, Hammerton will continue in his role with a focus on transitioning key donor relationships and supporting an orderly leadership transition. 

An announcement will be made once a successor has been selected.

Zach Yoder has been appointed interim president of both OSF St. Mary and OSF Holy Family. He will step away from his current role as president at OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton for up to six months to support this transition. During this period, Lisa Schepers, DNP, currently vice president and chief nursing officer, will serve as interim president of OSF Saint Anthony’s.

Moving forward, OSF plans to align OSF HealthCare Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee, OSF St. Mary and OSF Holy Family under a single president through the upcoming search process. This integrated leadership model will strengthen the regional approach for OSF to deliver care throughout the west central Illinois market. OSF Saint Luke will continue to be led by Jackie Kernan, MSN, RN, during this transition. Once this position has been filled, Kernan will remain as president of OSF HealthCare Saint Katharine Medical Center in Dixon.

These interim leadership changes will be effective January 5, 2026.

The Digital Health Most Wired survey and recognition program serves as a comprehensive “Digital Health Check-up” for health care organizations across the world. Some of Dr. McGee’s recent accomplishments include collaborating with the University of Illinois Cancer Center at Urbana, the University of Illinois College of Medicine and Origin Commercial Ventures, which led to the development of the Breakthrough Treatment Center at the OSF Cancer Institute and the BEAT Cancer Research Initiative. 

These efforts bring early phase cancer control and treatment to patients with an emphasis on engineering to advance cancer care. 

Dr. McGee earned his Bachelor of Science from Quincy College and his medical degree from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Chicago. He went on to earn a Master of Health Care Management from Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

John Greinwald Jr., MD, otolaryngologist at OSF Children’s Hospital, performed the first implants this month, giving local children access to the latest technology sooner than patients at other hospitals in the region.

The Cochlear Nucleus Nexa System features upgradable firmware, internal rewritable memory, and dynamic power management. These innovations allow patients to receive software updates and future improvements without the need for additional surgery. The system also securely stores a user’s unique hearing information, or MAPs, so it can be transferred to a new sound processor if needed. The system includes the smallest and lightest sound processors with all-day battery life, adaptive sound processing for clearer hearing in different environments, and a connected ecosystem for ongoing care and support.

On Wednesday, October 22, OSF HealthCare leaders and community members gathered for the unveiling of the Hospice Beacon of Light. The single beam, visible from dusk until 2 a.m., symbolizes comfort, peace and remembrance for patients and families served by the hospice home.

The light was made possible through a generous donation from the wife of a former patient, who wanted to create a lasting tribute to the care her husband received. Since its opening, OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home has served thousands of patients and families across central Illinois, providing medical, emotional and spiritual support during life’s final journey.

The recognition is based on an independent survey conducted by Forbes and Statista, which gathered input from more than 17,000 U.S. employees working for health care and social welfare providers with at least 1,000 employees nationwide. The survey considered more than 300,000 employer evaluations collected over the past three years, highlighting organizations that demonstrate excellence in workplace culture, employee satisfaction, and commitment to health care professionals.

OSF Saint Anthony’s was lauded as an exemplar in 14 distinct areas of care as being documented by outpacing national standards in the following:

“We went well above, and we’re raising the bar,” says Charlotte R. Liley, DNP, CNL, director of professional practice and nursing operations. “We couldn't do this without all of the nursing staff being on board and being involved in the care of our patients.” 

Liley credits the hospital’s “professional practice model” and “transformational leadership” as two reasons why this status was achieved. 

Nurses at OSF St. Anthony’s can “practice at the top of their license,” added Lisa Schepers, DNP, MBA, RN, NE-BC, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. Schepers notes that while Mission Partners (i.e. employees) are celebrating this milestone achievement, they are also already looking ahead to the next application window to maintain the “Magnet with Distinction” status. 

“As soon as you get the designation, the clock starts for your next one,” Schepers says. “It’s every four years. You don’t just get it and keep it. Every four years, we will have to meet the same criteria, and then they do change the criteria. We’re already looking at, what are we doing now, what do we need to add, what do we need to shore up so that we can continue this road?” 

Schepers adds that this recognition should mean a lot to the Riverbend region, as residents can trust OSF St. Anthony’s to take care of them. “Riverbend residents should feel amazing and proud that OSF Saint Anthony’s represents them in their community. Also, they should feel secure in the knowledge that when they come to OSF St. Anthony’s, they are going to get the highest level of care. Their outcomes are going to be better because the nurses are so engaged, and the nurses have demonstrated this high level of performance.” 

The decision to seek and begin work on achieving Magnet status began in 2022. OSF Saint Anthony’s recognition ensures Magnet designation through 2029.

Nearly half of all U.S. adults live with hypertension, making it one of the nation's leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease and premature death. Despite its prevalence, both accurate diagnosis and effective long-term management of hypertension remain clinical challenges.

As one of only 42 health systems nationwide participating in PCORI’s Health Systems Implementation Initiative, OSF will use the project to strengthen patient-centered strategies for hypertension care in 123 adult primary care practice sites and over 100,000 patients. Over the next four years, key areas of collaboration include:  

•          Integrating proven, evidence-based strategies into care models
•          Leveraging digital tools to better engage patients in their care
•          Address barriers such as social determinants of health
•          Provide advanced training for care teams
•          Enhance data analytics to support improved health outcomes

“We are excited to collaborate across OSF and other national colleagues through this initiative, leveraging our collective resources to improve the care and experience of those we serve.” said Melinda Cooling, DNP, MBA, FAANP, chief nurse and advanced practice provider executive for OSF HealthCare. “It is our goal to provide team-based care for our patients with a digital component through OSF and to work with a multidisciplinary research team of physicians, advanced practice nurses, an anthropologist and Mission Partners within OSF to help patients better manage their blood pressure, reduce risks and improve their overall well-being. By translating research into practice, OSF will continue to demonstrate our commitment to innovation, exceptional clinical care, and delivering the highest quality support to those we have been called to serve.”

Building on the success of a recently completed capacity building project also funded by PCORI, this project will  improve hypertension management by implementing findings from a PCORI-funded comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) study showing the comparative clinical effectiveness of clinic and telehealth-based models of hypertension care.

This funding award has been approved pending completion of PCORI’s business and programmatic review and issuance of a formal award contract.

Every year, more than 700 children in Illinois are diagnosed with cancer – an emotionally devastating experience for families. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month honors children affected by cancer and raises awareness for additional research and support.

The new name reflects the comprehensive care already being delivered to children with cancer and blood disorders in Central Illinois. It was chosen to better represent the full scope of services provided, from diagnosis through treatment, survivorship and long-term support, while highlighting the hospital’s role as a regional leader in pediatric cancer and hematology care.

The name change does not affect patient care, insurance coverage, physician referrals or the hospital’s affiliation with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the Midwest. Families will continue to see the same trusted physicians, nurses and care teams.

Throughout September, Mission Partners across OSF HealthCare will proudly wear Paint the Town Gold shirts as a symbol of solidarity. The initiative also includes yard signs displayed throughout the community by Mission Partners, families and local businesses all month, the Murray Baker Bridge lit in gold on Monday, September 15, at 7 p.m., and a gold ribbon illuminated on the side of OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center every night throughout September. Community members are encouraged to wear gold and share selfies on social media using the hashtag #PaintTheTownGold.

Jun Zhang, MD, PhD, has accepted the position of vice president, Oncology Research for OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute.

Dr. Zhang will oversee all oncology clinical research and supporting infrastructure at the OSF Cancer Institute, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures, good clinical practice, financial stewardship and regulatory compliance. Additionally, Dr. Zhang will continue the development of the OSF Breakthrough Treatment Center (clinical trial program).

A nationally recognized leader in the research and treatment of lung cancer, Dr. Zhang has extensive expertise in bench-to-bedside translation and the development of investigator-initiated clinical trials. He has authored over 100 publications, including articles in journals such as Clinical Cancer Research, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, JAMA Oncology, and New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Zhang is a member of many prestigious organizations, including American Association for Cancer Research, American Society of Clinical Oncology, European Society for Medical Oncology, International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer and Sigma Xi.

Most recently, Dr. Zhang served as director of Medical Oncology Clinical Research services at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He was also associate director of the early phase program medical oncology program and co-director of the lung cancer program. Dr. Zhang achieved the rank of professor on the Clinical Scholar Track at Kansas University School of Medicine, reflecting his experience and academic excellence in both clinical medical oncology and biological laboratory research.

Dr. Zhang earned his doctorate in Clinical Medicine from Hunan Medical University and his PhD in Cellular Biology and Anatomy from Louisiana State University Health Science Center. He then completed his PhD post-doctoral fellowships at Dana Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard University and University of California San Francisco. Additionally, Dr. Zhang completed his clinical medical oncology fellowship at Emory University.

The clinic provides a convenient, direct pathway to specialized care for athletes experiencing sports-related injuries. Instead of first visiting urgent care or prompt care facilities and then being referred to OSF Orthopedics, injured athletes can walk directly into the Saturday clinic and be seen by an orthopedic specialist.

Patients should enter through the main entrance and proceed to the OSF Orthopedics office on the fourth floor.
