OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute in Peoria, Illinois continues to expand care options for many types of cancers, including gynecologic carcinosarcoma.</span></p><p><span>Gynecologic carcinosarcomas are rare cancerous tumors, mainly impacting the uterus and ovaries, which take on characteristics of epithelial (develops from the cells that cover the ovaries or line the uterus) cancers, as well as sarcomas (develops in bones, cartilage, muscle, fat, blood vessels and more). It’s estimated roughly two out of every 100,000 women will develop these rare tumors each year.</span></p><p><span>OSF has been able to treat patients with this very rare cancer before, but now with additional oncology specialists at OSF Cancer Institute, the teams are able to better serve these patients and offer them clinical trials as well.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span><strong>Uniqueness of gynecologic carcinosarcoma:</strong></span></p><p><span>"One of the things that is unique about it is that it could be coming from the uterus, it could be coming from the ovaries, and so we group those together as gynecologic carcinosarcoma as a treatment group," says Michelle Rowland, MD, a gynecologic oncologist with OSF HealthCare.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Chemotherapy and surgery are normally the treatment options doctors use to treat gynecologic carcinosarcoma. Proton therapy at OSF Cancer Institute offers the medical team an additional option in specific situations.</span></p><p><span>"We do use radiation sometimes," Dr. Rowland says. "In terms of proton therapy, there could be options for that which would add something unique, depending on where the cancer is occurring at that time. We also have investigational studies and expertise in investigational pharmacy and managing trials. This offers some options for patients."</span></p><p><span>Dr. Rowland and her team in Peoria have opened one clinical trial for patients with gynecologic carcinosarcoma. Additionally, Dr. Rowland says she is working to launch a study with the University of Alabama-Birmingham, which is currently focused on carcinosarcoma. OSF Cancer Institute specialists have a weekly tumor board meeting to put a multi-disciplinary approach together to help each patient, providing individualized care for them.</span></p><p><span>"We're putting together a think tank with experts across the country in this field," Dr. Rowland says. "We know some of the latest and greatest in terms of what to try, and we're also working on getting clinical trials open specifically for patients with carcinosarcoma."</span></p><p><span>The goal of the clinical trial is to find a treatment plan that works better than the current options. By learning more about the molecular basis of these tumors, the clinical trials can hopefully lead to better outcomes.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span><strong>Concerning signs and symptoms:&nbsp;</strong></span></p><p><span>"Very similar to ovarian and endometrial cancers, we're often worried about patients who have vaginal bleeding when they shouldn't, like post-menopausal women with bleeding," Dr. Rowland says. "Abdominal bloating, nausea and vomiting; symptoms where your bowel or your bladder are changing. These are things we'd recommend you reach out to a physician for a workup.                         <title>Quicker and Safer Cancer Radiation Treatment</title>

                        <guid>https://newsroom.osfhealthcare.org/quicker-and-safer-cancer-radiation-treatment/</guid><pp:caseid>503868</pp:caseid><description><![CDATA[<p><span>From chemotherapy to radiation therapy, cancer care is complex, and technology and science are constantly trying to keep up to make things easier for the patient.</span></p><p><span>At the </span><a href="https://www.osfhealthcare.org/cancer/locations/centers/danville/"><span>OSF Bobette Steely Hegeler Cancer Care Center</span></a><span> in Danville, Illinois, </span><a href="https://newsroom.osfhealthcare.org/cutting-edge-cancer-treatment-now-available--at-osf-cancer-center-in-danville/"><span>top-of-the line radiation technology</span></a><span> is the newest tool in the center’s arsenal to achieve that goal. And it’s getting positive feedback from patients.</span></p><p><span>“We’re thrilled to have it,” says </span><a href="https://providers.osfhealthcare.org/provider/Crystal+D.+Reed/1465784"><span>Crystal Reed</span></a><span>, MD, radiation oncologist at the cancer center.</span></p><p><span>The TrueBeam® radiotherapy system, a medical linear accelerator developed by Varian Medical Systems, targets tumors quicker and more precisely than the cancer center’s previous linear accelerator, also a Varian device. What was a 10 to 30 minute lay-down on a hard table is now just a couple minutes, Dr. Reed says.</span></p><p><span>Another cutting-edge feature: respiratory gating.</span></p><p><span>“It can monitor your breathing so that it can stop the actual treatments if the linear accelerator notes that the lesion being treated moves out of the field,” Dr. Reed says. “You want precision, most of all, all the time in radiation. You want to treat the area that needs to be treated and treat the least amount of normal tissue possible. Because you don't want people having side effects because of normal tissue being treated when it doesn't need to be.”</span></p><p><span>It was a months-long process to swap out the machines in the “vault” surrounded by thick concrete so radiation does not escape. Mission Partners (OSF HealthCare employees) at the cancer center also attended a week-long training at Varian Headquarters in Nevada, and Varian representatives were in Danville for the first few treatments to make sure things went well.</span></p><p><span>“This is the top of the line linear accelerator from Varian, which is the premier radiation linear accelerator manufacturer,” Dr. Reed says. “So the fact that [patients] can have it here in a smaller town makes it such that they don't have to drive to Champaign-Urbana or Chicago or Louisville or wherever it might be.”</span></p><p><span>The linear accelerator was made possible in-part thanks to an earlier-announced $3 million contribution from the estate of Julius W. Hegeler II, a well-known Danville philanthropist. The cancer center is named in honor of Hegeler’s wife Bobette, who herself battled cancer.</span></p><p><span>Phil Muehl is chairperson of Hegeler Foundation and of the OSF HealthCare Sacred Heart Medical Center </span><a href="https://www.osfhealthcarefoundation.org/about-us/foundation-boards/"><span>Community Council</span></a><span>, the hospital’s fundraising body. Muehl says Hegeler always had a soft spot for the Danville hospital, so to make this part of his legacy is important.</span></p><p><span>“It's critical for the community that we have the latest and greatest technology for cancer. Cancer affects way too many people.
