Two OSF HealthCare Hospitals Among 'Top Rural Hospitals' in U.S.

OSF HealthCare's Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth, Illinois and St. Francis Hospital and Medical Group in Escanaba, Michigan have been recognized for quality and safety by once again making The Leapfrog Group’s Top Rural Hospital list.

The Top Rural Hospital Award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive.

After hearing the news about the Top Hospital recognition, St. Francis President Dave Lord responded, “We are especially honored for our community hospital to be among the elite hospitals in the United States for the seventh time!”

This is the third year in a row OSF Holy Family Medical Center has achieved the recognition.

“Serving our patients and their families with the greatest care and love in the safest possible setting is a challenge our Mission Partners (employees) embrace every day. This recognition is a rewarding reflection of our hyper vigilance to safety protocols and the high bar we set for the quality experience we strive for every day, with every patient.”

Nearly 2,100 hospitals were considered for the award. Among those, OSF St. Francis Hospital and OSF Holy Family Medical Center received one of 18 Top Rural Hospital distinctions awarded in the United States. Four hospitals were awarded in Michigan and eight were given the distinction in Illinois. Nationally, there are 120 Top Hospitals in four categories from 28 different states:

  • 18 Top Rural Hospitals
  • 10 Top Children’s Hospitals
  • 37 Top General Hospitals
  • 55 Top Teaching Hospitals

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“We are pleased to recognize these OSF HealthCare Hospitals,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “This demonstrates extraordinary dedication to patients and to the communities they serve. We congratulate the board, staff and clinicians whose efforts made this honor possible and know they share pride in this achievement.”

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers in the 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest known standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in its category.
