OSF HealthCare earns recognition in heart attack care

Three OSF HealthCare hospitals and their cardiovascular care teams have earned national recognition for excellence in heart attack care, highlighting the expertise, coordinated response and commitment to quality outcomes that make OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute a destination for advanced heart care.

OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford and OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington received the 2026 American College of Cardiology National Cardiovascular Data Registry Chest Pain–MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award. The hospitals are among approximately 350 nationwide to earn the distinction.

OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center has been a Platinum recipient for 20 consecutive years, OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center for nine consecutive years and OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony Medical Center is a seven-time Platinum recipient.

The Platinum award recognizes hospitals that consistently deliver heart attack care aligned with evidence-based clinical guidelines established by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. Recipients demonstrate sustained achievement on key performance measures tracked through the Chest Pain–MI Registry.

The recognition across all three hospitals also reflects a shared commitment to high-quality care throughout the OSF cardiovascular network. “This is a highly significant and very distinctive honor,” says Darrel Gumm, MD, vice president of OSF Cardiovascular Institute at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. “When you have all three hospitals achieving this level of recognition, it speaks to the commitment of OSF physicians and other Mission Partners truly serving our communities. This is something to be very proud of.”

Earning the Platinum designation for 20 consecutive years is a significant milestone for OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center, Gumm says. That consistency reflects the contributions of teams across the hospital. “For OSF Saint Francis to earn 20 years of Platinum is very special,” Dr. Gumm says. “It highlights an outstanding program – not just in cardiology, but from everyone at every level, from the ER to the cath lab.”

More than 800,000 Americans experience a heart attack each year. When a heart attack occurs, every minute matters. The Chest Pain–MI Registry helps hospitals evaluate their performance against national standards and identify opportunities to improve the quality, safety and outcomes of care for patients experiencing serious cardiac events.

To earn the Platinum designation, hospitals must demonstrate sustained excellence over two consecutive years and achieve top performance on measures related to guideline-directed heart attack care. For OSF, recognition reinforces a commitment to continuous improvement and maintaining high standards for patients and communities.

“People don't always know where to go in their community to receive the best care for the problem they're having,” Dr. Gumm says. “Having an understanding of what's offered and where to find excellence is important.”
